Hold the Turkey : Two O.C. Restaurants Offer Thanksgiving Alternatives

It’s easy to fall into a Thanksgiving rut.

Sleep late. Wake up and turn on the television. Watch marching bands and gigantic floats wend their way through New York. Flip the channel and catch the Detroit Lions’ annual Thanksgiving Day game. Then move into the dining room for the turkey dinner.

As an alternative, several of Orange County’s finer restaurants are inviting diners to set tradition aside when it comes time for the Big Meal.

Gustaf Anders in Santa Ana is offering a Thanksgiving Day menu that includes smoked reindeer with horseradish sauce as an appetizer, followed by venison served with lingonberry truffle sauce.

And Le Meridian in Newport Beach is inviting diners to take a culinary walk on the wild game side. The Thanksgiving Day menu starts with sauteed antelope salad. Then it’s on to ravioli of pheasant and wild mushrooms, Guinea hen with mixed seasonal vegetables and wild duck.

The price: $39 a person at Gustaf Anders, $60 at Le Meridian.
