Michael Jackson and the Media

Share

Webster’s Dictionary defines obsession as “a persistent, disturbing preoccupation with an often unreasonable idea or feeling.” Well, I’d say that pretty much sums up the media’s current Michael Jackson witch hunt. What is it about this guy that makes reporters and anchorpersons lose all journalistic integrity and self-respect? When Channel 4 led Friday’s five o’clock news with the police seizing Michael Jackson’s medical records from his doctor’s office, I thought to myself, “Whoa, reality check time,” then quickly switched over to CNN.

I hate to burst the media’s bubble but most people, or least those of us who have lives, don’t give two hoots about Jackson’s private life, his problems, or what drug clinic he’s in. There’s real news to be reported. Besides, you’re not leaving anything really juicy for “Hard Copy.” So unless it’s an incredibly slow news day, leave the fluff and sleaze to those in the fluff and sleaze business.
