Major Rail, Highway Spending Announced: China plans to spend more than $140 billion on a range of projects to upgrade its transport infrastructure during the 1990s, the official New China News Agency said. The agency said the ambitious plan will include expanding the nation’s railway network to 43,500 miles from the current 33,000 miles and bring highways to 745,000 miles from the present 633,000 miles.
