Bryant Reeves scored 11 of his 29 points during a second-half surge and Brooks Thompson added 18 points Sunday, leading No. 10 Oklahoma State to an 88-72 victory over Southern Methodist at Dallas.
Reeves, a 7-footer, had four baskets and three free throws during a 24-14 run in the opening 8:38 of the second half, as Oklahoma State (2-0) expanded a five-point halftime lead to 65-50.
The Cowboys completed the run with three-point baskets by Thompson and Scott Sutton.
No. 18 Massachusetts 84, Oklahoma 83--Mike Williams of Massachusetts (4-1) made a shot from the baseline with 1.2 seconds left to complete a comeback from a 13-point halftime deficit at Norman, Okla.
Kenneth Conley scored 21 points for Oklahoma (0-1).
No. 20 Syracuse 98, Tennessee 65--The Orangemen took a 15-0 lead and breezed to a season-opening victory at Syracuse, N.Y.
Lawrence Moten scored 13 of Syracuse’s first 17 points. He had 23 in the first half, 29 in the game.
Tennessee (1-1) committed 17 first-half turnovers.
No. 21 Purdue 88, Portland 73--Glenn Robinson scored a tournament-record 41 points, leading the Boilermakers to the championship of the Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage.
Robinson made five shots, including two three-pointers, in the first seven minutes as Purdue (3-0) built a 16-point lead.
OTHER GAMES
Monty Williams scored 42 points and Ryan Hoover added six three-point baskets as Notre Dame opened the season with a 95-74 victory over Valparaiso (0-1) at South Bend, Ind. Williams scored 31 points in the second half. . . . Mark Hendrickson of Washington State (3-0) scored 14 points in a 56-46 victory over Marquette (2-1) in the championship of the San Juan Shootout in Puerto Rico. Pacific (1-2) finished seventh with a 99-94 overtime victory over Wright (0-3).
Memphis State (1-0) used a 33-3 second-half run en route to a 92-59 victory over Alcorn State (0-1) at Memphis. . . . Carl Ray Harris scored 24 points to lead Fresno State (1-0) to an 88-58 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (0-2) at Fresno.
