LONG BEACH : Council OKs Plan to House Homeless on Navy Land
A homeless shelter will be set up on property the U.S. Navy is abandoning in Long Beach under a plan approved Tuesday by the City Council.
Under the proposal, which still must be approved by the Navy, the nonprofit Christian Outreach Appeal, in partnership with the Los Angeles Mission, would establish the shelter using 204 apartments on 26 acres of the Navy’s Cabrillo and Savannah housing projects in west Long Beach.
The remainder of the land would be used for two new schools, a university-related research park and a job training center.
Navy officials are expected to either give or sell the property to the parties in coming months.
A council majority had tried to exclude the homeless shelter, but Navy officials pointed out that federal law requires that projects to benefit the homeless be given priority for surplus government property.
