A Lake Forest man who suffered back and neck injuries after his pickup truck was hit by a sheriff’s deputy vehicle will receive $70,000 in a settlement with Orange County, attorneys said Tuesday.

David A. Cohn, 24, lost his job as a construction worker after the June, 1990, crash because of his injuries, said attorney Richard Farnell.

“The car was hit so hard it flipped,” said Farnell, who said the deputy was traveling about 90 m.p.h. when the crash occurred. “Mr. Cohn was debilitated physically as well as financially.”

Orange County Sheriff’s Sgt. Raul Ramos, son of Orange County Undersheriff Raul A. Ramos, was on duty and traveling in an unmarked vehicle when he struck Cohn’s car, said attorney David Brobeck, who represents the county and the deputy named in the suit.

The county believed both parties were partially to blame for the crash, so a settlement was agreed upon, Brobeck said.

“We felt that there was some doubt to this claim, but it would be more economical to settle and resolve it than to take it to trial,” Brobeck said.
