Vinny Testaverde practiced with the Cleveland Browns for the first time in five weeks and said he hopes to play Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.

Testaverde has not played since he suffered a separated right shoulder on a nine-yard scramble Oct. 24 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. At the time, the Browns thought he might be out for the season.

Through years of neglect, the artificial turf at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia has grown unsafe, presenting players with unreasonable danger, an NFL groundskeeping consultant said.

The assessment came from George Toma, who examined the field Tuesday on the request of Eagle owner Norman Braman.

The Vet surface installed five years ago is full of ridges, gashes and holes that makes it especially dangerous for football, Toma said.

The New England Patriots put more pressure on struggling kicker Scott Sisson when they added Todd Peterson, a kicker he played against in college, to their practice squad.

Peterson was cut after being drafted in the seventh round by the New York Giants this year. As a senior at Georgia last season, he made 41 of 42 conversion attempts and 13 of 16 field-goal attempts.

Sisson, who played at Georgia Tech last season, has made only 14 of 25 field-goal attempts.

Defensive end Karl Wilson was signed by the San Francisco 49ers in a move to shore up their injury-weakened defensive line.

The signing of Wilson coincided with the placement of end Kevin Fagan on injured reserve, finishing him for the season.
