NEW YORK — U.S. airlines declared another price war Friday, slashing fares as much as 35% in their annual bid to stimulate traffic after the busy holiday season.
Trans World Airlines kicked off the traditional post-holiday gift-giving to the flying public late Thursday when it set bargain fares to domestic destinations, including San Juan and Honolulu, for travel between Jan. 6 and March 31.
TWA said sample round-trip fares under the new discounts include New York to Dallas for $314, New York to San Francisco for $410 and St. Louis to Washington for $240.
The discounts were matched Friday by American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, America West Airlines, USAir, Northwest Airlines and Continental Airlines. Most of the carriers said tickets must be purchased by Friday.
