Complaining of “overwhelming” media intrusion into her life, Princess Diana said Friday that she will reduce her public commitments to devote more time to her children.

Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles 12 years ago made her one of the world’s most famous women, pursued everywhere by cameras and reporters.

Transcripts of telephone calls allegedly made by the princess have been published, and paparazzi stalk her friends’ houses. Last month, Diana filed a lawsuit after the Sunday Mirror and Daily Mirror published pictures, taken by a hidden camera, of her working out at a private gym.

Charles, who separated from Diana a year ago, voiced a very different complaint last week: “Since the day I got married, people have chosen to ignore the things I continue to do day in and day out.”

Diana said her decision to draw back from the spotlight was supported by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

The princess is patron of 118 charities and has been particularly involved in supporting AIDS patients and battered wives.

She said she wants to spend more time with sons William, 11, and Harry, 9.
