Handel’s ‘Messiah’

George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah” remains among the composer’s best-known works more than 250 years after the classic oratorio premiered in Ireland.

These days, “Messiah” is a hit with the Los Angeles Master Chorale, which is sponsoring its 14th annual “Messiah” sing-along Saturday and Dec. 15 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

The sing-along will be led by Master Chorale conductor Paul Salamunovich and will include guest soprano Elissa Johnston, alto Kathryn Stewart, tenor Daniel Plaster and bass Stephen Grimm.

“Most everyone has sung some portion of (“Messiah”) in school or in a church choir, and that means we get a lot of ex-singers. Plus you have some people who can read music, and others just like to chime along,” said Salamunovich.

Singers can bring their own music or buy a music score at the performance for $7. Proceeds from the concert and sale of the score will go to the Master Chorale.
