Rockies Re-Sign Galarraga

National League batting champion Andres Galarraga and the Colorado Rockies agreed on a $12-million, four-year contract, which can increase to $16.4 million with performance bonuses.

Galarraga a 32-year-old first baseman who batted .370 after joining the Rockies as a free agent, will earn $3.85 million in each of the first two seasons and $2.15 million in each of the last two.

He can earn an additional $4.4 million in performance bonuses, with the salaries for the final two years rising to $4.1 million apiece if he has 500 plate appearances a year in 1995 and 1996.

College Football

Aloha Bowl Charities Inc., the promoters of the Aloha Bowl, has suggested to the NCAA that it hold a four-team elimination series in Hawaii to determine the college football championship.

Lenny Klompus, chief operating officer of Aloha Bowl Charities, confirmed that a letter containing such a proposal has been sent to Cedric Dempsey, the new NCAA executive director.

San Francisco 49er running back Ricky Watters strained right knee ligaments against the Cincinnati Bengals and could be sidelined for up to two weeks. Wide receiver John Taylor, who suffered a pinched nerve in his neck, and tackle Steve Wallace, who sprained his right knee, are “fairly questionable” for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, 49ers Coach George Seifert said.
