SUN VALLEY : Neighborhood Watch Plans Holiday Event

In Sun Valley this weekend, holiday cheer will not only put neighbors in a festive mood, it will also help them fight crime.

Events such as the Neighborhood Watch Annual Christmas Sing-Along Party being held Saturday provides a basic element that makes a Neighborhood Watch work, by getting neighbors to work together, said Mary Bobek, a community representative of the group.

“By having these events and getting the people to know each other, it has a big impact on crime,” Bobek said. “You’d be surprised by the reaction from these people. They’re more alert and on their toes. They get to know their neighbors, what kind of vehicle they drive.”

The party--in its eighth consecutive year--will include Christmas carols, an appearance by Santa Claus, a community potluck and a pinata filled with candy canes.

The group will also be collecting for a food drive organized by the North Hollywood Division of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Bobek said she expects about 300 people to attend the party, including members of the Neighborhood Watch and their families. The high turnout is expected this year because a number of new families have moved into the area, she said.

“This is what draws people out as a community,” Bobek said. “Through something like this we can reduce crime by 97%.”
