PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Newberry, Slater to Remain Out

Share

The Rams were dealt a setback Tuesday upon learning that starting guard Tom Newberry will remain sidelined for a few more weeks with a knee injury.

Coach Chuck Knox said he also will keep starting tackle Jackie Slater sidelined for Sunday’s game at New Orleans. Slater has been bothered by a torn chest muscle.

“It’s not good news,” Knox said of Newberry’s latest exams. “And we have a lot of other people with bumps and bruises, which means we won’t be able to go in full pads (today).”

Knox said Keith Loneker will start again for Newberry, and Darryl Ashmore will replace Slater.

Safety Michael Stewart is suffering from a sprained ankle, and his availability for Sunday will be determined later in the week.

Linebacker Shane Conlan reported for treatment Tuesday and said he is no longer experiencing pain in his injured knee. Knox said Conlan’s knee will require more time to heal, and Conlan will miss this week’s game.

The Rams placed wide receiver Richard Buchanan on waivers with the intention of re-signing him to their practice squad. At the same time, the team promoted defensive lineman Jeff Esters to their 53-man roster. The Rams added Esters to their practice squad a week ago.
