The president of Montgomery Ward & Co. has resigned after only 14 months with the company, a spokeswoman for Ward announced Wednesday.

No reason was given for Harold Kahn’s departure, which coincided with an announcement that the retail chain will expand into the home shopping business and open new stores in La Crosse, Wis., and Owensboro, Ky., by mid-1994.

Kahn’s duties will be taken over by other Ward executives until a new president is named, but the search for a successor has not yet begun, spokeswoman Sarina Butler said.

Butler would not say whether the resignation was related to the expansion plan. The new stores will feature home furnishings, appliances and electronics.

Market analysts said the move toward home furnishings will benefit the privately held company.
