Retiree to Head Board of College District

Share

Allan Jacobs, a retired elementary and secondary school administrator from Simi Valley, has succeeded Newbury Park dentist Gregory P. Cole as president of the Ventura County Community College District Board.

Jacobs was elected to the president’s seat, which is rotated yearly at the district. Cole will stay on the five-member board as one of its trustees.

Jacobs, 63, said his goals include a successful resolution to contract negotiations with the college faculty and making sure that Moorpark, Oxnard and Ventura colleges get money for needed construction projects.

Jacobs retired in 1991 from the Simi Valley Unified School District, where he was an associate superintendent, and ran for the college district board later that same year.

During his term as president, Cole made headlines with his support of Proposition 174, the failed November ballot measure that called for giving parents a $2,600 voucher for each child they sent to private school.

He was also known at the district for his support of conservative causes--such as his reluctance to allow the colleges to sell condoms on campus--and his insistence on tough, budget-cutting measures that some teachers and staff said showed a lack of understanding for their jobs.
