COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Virginia Holds Off Coppin St.

Freshman Mike Powell made two free throws with one second remaining Thursday night as No. 22 Virginia held off upset-minded Coppin State, 63-61, at Charlottesville, Va.

Coppin State pressured Virginia (3-1), still playing without injured point guard Cory Alexander, into 17 turnovers, 10 on steals. Stephen Stewart had 25 points for Coppin State (4-3).

No. 2 North Carolina 89, Colorado State 66--Rasheed Wallace, a 7-foot freshman, made all nine shots from the field and scored 19 points to lead the Tar Heels over the previously unbeaten Rams at Chapel Hill, N.C. Eric Montross added 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Tar Heels (7-1). Jeff Shelly led Colorado State (3-1) with 19 points.

No. 8 Massachusetts 90, Central Connecticut State 63--Lou Roe scored 27 points, including 14 in the first eight minutes of the second half, and the Minutemen (6-1) forced 23 turnovers by the Blue Devils (1-3) at Amherst, Mass.

No. 14 Arizona 88, Utah 81--The Wildcats (4-0) went on an 8-0 run to open up a 12-point lead with 2:19 to play and held on at Salt Lake City.

No. 15 Oklahoma State 89, Texas Christian 67--Bryant Reeves scored 20 points and the Cowboys (5-1) broke the game open with a 20-4 run at the end of the first half at Stillwater, Okla. Kurt Thomas scored a career-high 30 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Texas Christian (1-3).

Boston College 75, No. 13 Syracuse 58--Howard Eisley scored 22 points to lead the Eagles (5-0) to a Big East Conference victory over the Orangemen (4-1) at Syracuse, N.Y.
