OJAI : School Board Leaders Reelected to Posts

At their annual changing of the guard, members of the Ojai Unified School District Board of Trustees opted for no change at all.

Muriel Lavender was elected to another term as board president, and Vice President Vincent France and Clerk Karen McBride each were named to another year in their positions during the annual reorganization meeting late Tuesday.

Lavender, a former teacher first elected to the school board in 1977, served four consecutive years as board president in the 1980s.

“One year is a very short period of time to serve as president of the board,” said Lavender, 56. “The school board president has a close working relationship with the superintendent.”

Lavender’s board colleagues said she has worked hard for the eight-campus, 3,500-student school district.

“She’s served on the board for many years and done an excellent job,” McBride said. “And she’s well-educated in the programs surrounding board issues.”

Lavender said she has several goals to accomplish in 1994, including lowering class sizes by allowing students more time in computer labs and establishing monthly reports to the board from department heads and mentor teachers.
