OXNARD : School Board Agrees to Use Counselor

Share

Members of the board of the Oxnard School District agreed to use a facilitator to solve their interpersonal problems even though they will be forced to bring private disputes into the open.

District Supt. Norman Brekke told board members Wednesday that if they choose to meet with a facilitator, a professional counselor who resolves conflicts, state open meeting laws require them to do so in public.

“I’ve spoken with our attorney, and he has said there is no legal means to do this session in private,” he said.

Initially, board President Jim Suter proposed hiring a facilitator to ease the trustees’ recent racial tensions.

But several board members hesitated to proceed with grievance sessions when they were told that they would have to reveal their personal feelings to the public.
