LAGUNA NIGUEL : Godfrey Becomes Mayor on 3-2 Vote

Janet Godfrey is the city’s new mayor.

Godfrey was elected by the City Council at its Tuesday meeting. The vote was 3 to 2, with Godfrey and council members Patricia C. Bates and Thomas W. Wilson, the former mayor, voting for Godfrey.

Councilmen James F. Krembas and Mark Goodman voted for Goodman.

Immediately after taking her new post, Godfrey nominated Bates as mayor pro tem. Again, the vote was 3 to 2, with Krembas and Goodman voting for Goodman.

Godfrey, 48, was elected to a four-year term on the council in November, 1992. Godfrey, a special education teacher at Garden Grove High School, has lived in Laguna Niguel 22 years.

Council members occupy the mayor’s seat for one year.
