Echo Lake

Share

* I am one of the few people who were born and raised around Echo Park and still live very close. I live in the Bunker Hill Towers. I am told, for physical reasons, to walk two to three miles every day. So for the first time in probably 30-40 years I took a walk around Echo Lake where I hung out as a child. It was delightful to see all the young adults, mostly Latinos, with their children having a wonderful time with the new playground, and everybody doing their own thing.

But where I was very disappointed was all the garbage and foam cups around the lake. This sort of reminds me of a warehouse that I own on Imperial Street, which is only one block long. There are only four manufacturers there, and no matter how many trash barrels are put out, there is more garbage on that street than you can imagine.

Must we live in this type of environment? I have been to Singapore, Malaysia, China, and Japan, and you just don’t see this.

One of the things I think should be put up, for very little expense, are signs telling people in English and Spanish what the fines are for dumping garbage in the lake. Also, have a few more patrol officers giving out tickets, and I guarantee the city will make money.
