Benefit Nets $70,000 for Youths

Friends of the Fulfillment Fund raised $70,000 for disadvantaged students at its Nov. 17 benefit at Jade West in the ABC Entertainment Center in Century City. The program provides mentoring, academic counseling and scholarships for 1,000 Los Angeles-area students annually.

Food for All, a nonprofit organization working in partnership with supermarkets to fight hunger, received a $150,000 grant from the Philip Morris Cos. and Kraft General Foods. Food for All helps food banks by allowing shoppers to make donations at the checkout.

Laser Research & Technology Development Laboratory of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center raised $200,000 at its Oct. 23 Medallion Ball at the Beverly Hilton. W.J. Sanders III received the “Heart of Gold” award. During its 49-year history, the Medallion Group has raised more than $6.5 million for the hospital. Charles Hirschman is president.

Tierra Del Sol Foundation netted $8,500 at its pasta dinner and holiday boutique, held at its main campus in Sunland on Nov. 7. The foundation provides training and employment programs to people with developmental disabilities.

Haven House, a shelter for battered women and children, received $18,500 raised Nov. 5-7 at a Breeders’ Cup event at Santa Anita. The fund-raiser was sponsored by Haven Auxiliary.

Hollywood Sunset Free Clinic has announced a challenge grant of $25,000 from the Audrey and Sydney Irmas Charitable Foundation in support of its Homeless Mobile Care Project. From now to Dec. 31, the foundation will match each dollar donated to the clinic. The mobile project provides medical care and clothing to about 5,000 homeless people at campsites and shelters throughout Los Angeles.

Five Acres, a treatment center for abused and neglected children, received two grants totaling $152,000. An $82,000 donation from the Weingart Foundation will finance the rehabilitation of six cottages and group homes in Pasadena and Altadena. The $70,000 grant from the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation of Los Angeles will provide services to children with hearing disorders who have been abused or neglected.
