GUNS BAR: Look for the Orange County Bar Assn. to come out today with the strongest statement it’s ever made supporting gun control. The bar is expected to announce it backs a total ban on concealable handguns. A 14-member bar task force, which includes both prosecutors and defense attorneys, has spent weeks gathering data and debating the issue. One member says what they’ve learned about the availability of handguns has been “quite an eye-opener.”

CITY ON THE MOVE: If Garden Grove wants a new city hall, it’s got to move soon. The city council has set a Tuesday vote on whether to take over the county-owned Ralph B. Clark Building--just across Acacia Parkway from its current city hall. The council must act before Jan. 1 because new state law will prohibit cities from using redevelopment money to buy a city hall. . . . Councilman Mark Leyes says purchase of the Clark building would cost $2.2 million--about $500,000 less than the cost of needed refurbishing to the current City Hall.

ICE MAKER: The Zamboni, that stubby vehicle used to resurface National Hockey League ice rinks, comes either gasoline-powered or with a battery. Company President Richard Zamboni of Huntington Beach was surprised when his first battery machines were hard to sell. But after a redesign, he says, “They’ve really taken off.” . . . He’s now sold 70 of the non-polluters in recent years to indoor rinks. Next order: eight battery-powered Zambonis for the 1994 Winter Olympics in Norway.

ON HER OWN: If Gov. Pete Wilson was impressed with a petition drive by local lawyers asking that he elevate Municipal Judge B. Tam Nomoto to Superior Court, he hasn’t made it public. Nomoto, who’s been on the Municipal bench 14 years, has decided to launch her own campaign. . . . She’ll run next June for the seat of retiring Superior Court Judge Robert A. Knox. Says Nomoto: “I’ve been contacting people, and I’m amazed at the amount of support there is.”
