ROUNDUP : Cal Poly SLO Latest Victim of Master’s

Emeka Okenwa had 20 points, nine rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals before fouling out late in the second half, leading The Master’s College to a 79-73 nonconference victory over host Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Thursday night.

Doug Leaman had 20 points and Andy Thompson added 15 for Master’s (9-2). James Mosley (11) also scored in double figures for Master’s, which notched its fifth win in a row. Shanta Cotright led San Luis Obispo (1-6) with 22 points.

In another men’s basketball game:

East L.A. 87, Valley 67--Valley committed 15 turnovers in the first half and 26 overall in a first-round game at the Pasadena tournament. Darius Moses led Valley (5-7) with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Kenyth Henry (13 points) and Brian Jackson (11 points, 11 rebounds) also scored in double figures for the Monarchs, who meet Santa Barbara today at 2 p.m. in a consolation bracket game.

HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING

Royal 36, Thousand Oaks 29--The Highlanders overcame a 29-9 deficit to win a rematch of last season’s Marmonte League co-champions at Royal.

Royal (8-3, 1-0) won the last five matches, including quick pins by Julio Vargas (189 pounds) and Chris Mayberry (heavyweight).

Bishop Amat 37, Harvard-Westlake 25--Matt Howard and Rand Waldron had pins and Joe Bautista, Josh Eisenberg, John Kang and Paul Michels won by decisions, but the Wolverines (10-1-1, 0-1) lost a Mission League match.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Simi Valley 91, San Diego Madison 40--Nathan Simmons (28 points), R.J. Pierson (16) and Vernon Simmons (15) led Simi Valley (5-1) in a first-round game at the San Diego Serra tournament.

Hamilton 62, Kennedy 59--Keith Brydon had 17 and Dante Jones 12 for the Golden Cougars (4-4), who fell in the semifinals of the Hamilton tournament.

Calabasas 63, Newbury Park 58--The Coyotes (5-4) led by 13 points after the third quarter then held off a Panther rally.

Four Calabasas players scored in double figures, including Nick Alexander, who had 14 points and 14 rebounds. Ryan Coleman and Billy Hoover each had 13 points.

Valley Alternative 57, Marlton 48--Freshman Mark Howell scored 21 points off the bench to lead Valley Alternative (1-2, 1-2) to a Magnet League victory.

Highland Hall 65, Le Lycee 44--Eric Trafton had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Hawks in a Westside League game. Jules Holbrook added 16 points.

L.A. Baptist 51, Santa Paula 37--L.A. Baptist fell behind, 17-14, after one period, but held visiting Santa Paula to 20 points the rest of the way to avenge a seven-point loss to the Cardinals a week ago.

Kevin Aust led L.A. Baptist (6-1) with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Landon LaPack had 10 points and Judah Regenstreis added 14 assists for the Knights.

San Fernando 55, Hoover 49--Javier Ramos scored 17 points to lead the Tigers in the first round of the La Canada tournament. Center Jerome Elliot added 15 points and 11 rebounds. Andereh Allaharyan had 19 points to lead the Tornadoes.

Channel Islands 68, Coastal Christian 49--Senior forward Josh Babauta of Channel Islands scored 19 points in a semifinal game of the Channel Islands tournament.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Village Christian 57, Paso Robles 43--Sophomore Lindy James had 14 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and six steals to lead the Crusaders (8-0) to a first-round victory in the San Luis Obispo tournament. Center Christy Ludwig scored 12 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter, when Village Christian put the game away.

North Hollywood 44, Canyon 41--The Huskies fought off a fourth-quarter comeback attempt to win in the first round of the Simi Valley tournament. Forward Anna Celaya scored 25 points and had 10 rebounds and Darvena Merritt scored 11 points and had 10 rebounds to lead North Hollywood.

Providence 53, Manoogian 28--Carrie McNutt scored 31 points and Providence (3-0) held Manoogian to eight points in the first half. McNutt averages 28 points a game.

Kennedy 48, Westchester 37-- Tami Ross scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds in a nonleague game. Center Kerry Garland had 15 rebounds and blocked 5 shots for the Cougars (2-2).

Harvard-Westlake 29, Calabasas 27--The Wolverines were outscored, 11-2, in the fourth quarter, but hung on to win the Marlboro tournament championship.

Angie Wong scored 11 points and Caroline Gibson had 10 rebounds for the Wolverines (6-2). Melissa Krolik had 15 points and 16 rebounds for Calabasas.

Alemany 78, Bell-Jeff 27--The Indians (8-0) outscored the Guards, 28-0, in the first quarter and romped.

Carley Funicello had 20 points and 13 rebounds. Zevette Mitchell had 12 points and 13 rebounds and Samantha Rigley had 18 points.

Campbell Hall 32, Pilgrim 23--Talar Sarkis had 12 points and eight rebounds to help put Campbell Hall in the championship game of its own tournament.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Buena 1, Rio Mesa 0--Matt Almaraz scored on an assist from Shepley Prohammer midway through the second half to give Buena (3-1-1) the win in a Channel League opener.
