CITY COUNCIL

8TH DISTRICT OFFICE: Approved a proposal to enter into a long-term lease with the 100 Black Men of Los Angeles Inc., a nonprofit organization, to rent a building under construction at 8475 S. Vermont Ave. The 15,000-square-foot facility will serve as the constituent service center and office for the 8th Council District. It replaces a building at the same location that was destroyed in last year’s riots.

ARMENIAN CHURCH: Approved the closure of Alexandria Avenue between Hollywood and Sunset boulevards from 3 to 8 p.m. Jan. 4 for a visit by His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of the Great Cilician See of the Armenian Church. The event is sponsored by St. Garabed Armenian Apostolic Church of Hollywood.

CHINESE NEW YEAR: Approved the closure of Broadway between Sunset Boulevard and Alpine Street from 4 a.m. Feb. 5 through 11:45 p.m. Feb. 6, for the Chinese New Year Street Fair.

HOW THEY VOTED

How South-Central and Eastside City Council representatives voted on selected issues. CONTRACTS: Approved a proposal requesting public hearings to discuss contracting out services previously provided by city employees. The purpose of the proposal is to “try and reduce the level of fear and paranoia” about potential job losses. Passed: 13-0.

Voting yes: Richard Alatorre, Mike Hernandez, Jackie Goldberg, Nate Holden, Mark Ridley-Thomas and Rudy Svorinich Jr. Absent: Rita Walters.

GUN CONTROL: Approved proposals requesting that the city host conferences on gun control with representatives from Long Beach, San Diego, Oakland, San Francisco and cities nationwide with populations exceeding 1 million. The conferences would explore solutions to the proliferation of guns. Passed: 13-1.

Voting yes: Alatorre, Hernandez, Goldberg, Holden, Ridley-Thomas and Walters. Voting no: Svorinich.

TRAINING FOR WOMEN: Accepted $75,000 in state funds to train 17- and 18-year-old minority women in the electrical trade. The training will be provided through the Los Angeles Unified School District, which is contributing $124,790 to the program. Trainees will be placed as apprentices with an electrical workers association and given the opportunity to be hired, officials said. Passed: 14-0. Voting yes: Alatorre, Hernandez, Goldberg, Holden, Svorinich and Walters. Absent: Ridley-Thomas.
