MISSION VIEJO : Mayor to Proclaim Year of the Family

Susan Withrow, introduced last week as the city’s new mayor, says the first thing she will do is “proclaim 1994 as the year of the international family,” using the guidelines of a similar United Nations program.

Withrow, a member of the City Council for the past two years, also is working with the Mission Viejo Activities Committee to develop a family theme for the city’s 1994 St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

She will also call for community members to submit the names of anyone “they think is a special family.” Families chosen will be recognized before several City Council meetings next year.

“The family is the fabric of society,” Withrow said. “I truly believe in my heart that society’s ills have escalated because of the deterioration of the family in many places.”

Withrow’s other major goal is to expand police protection, particularly in the area of youth crime prevention. The new mayor said she will push for cuts in the city budget and keep spending to a minimum.

Although the position of mayor is largely ceremonial, Withrow said it carries certain important responsibilities.

“Depending on their leadership style, whoever is mayor really sets the tone” of the council, she said.
