SLUDGE FOR SALE: What to do with the 400 tons of sludge produced each day by the city’s big Hyperion sewage treatment plant? Usually the city pays for it to be trucked to distant farms for fertilizer. But the folks at the Department of Public Works had an entrepreneurial brainstorm. They plan to mix it with lawn trimmings and sell it as organic compost (B1). . . . The city has been testing the compost at the Japanese Garden at the Tillman water reclamation plant in the Sepulveda Basin. City Hall’s brand name for the new product: “Topgro.”
