La Puente : Trash Hauler Gets Contract

Share

In an effort to meet state recycling requirements, the City Council has voted to give a single trash hauler an eight-year contract for garbage pickup and recycling in La Puente.

Valley Vista Disposal, an Industry-based trash hauler, bid lower than the Baldwin Park division of multinational conglomerate Waste Management Inc. The firm will help the city meet a state law that requires 25% of trash to be diverted away from landfills by 1995 and 50% by 2000, say city officials.

At present, the city’s estimated 9,400 households and 900 businesses are served by half a dozen companies with Waste Management handling 80% of the households. With so many smaller haulers, city officials said it was difficult for them to guarantee that the mandated levels of recycling were being performed properly. These haulers will retain their customers until Nov. 30, 1996. However, any new residents or businesses locating in La Puente will automatically be served by Valley Vista.
