It may be Christmas morning, but nature lovers still plan to troop out to Torrance’s Madrona Marsh Nature Preserve on Saturday for a walk among the wildlife.
Friends of the Madrona Marsh, a group seeking to preserve the 40-acre wetlands, conducts walks every fourth Saturday, which this month happens to fall on Christmas Day.
“If you don’t have a lot of presents to unwrap this would be the thing to do,” said Shirley Turner, the group’s co-founder and spokeswoman.
Environmentalists regard the marsh as an oasis of nature amid suburban sprawl.
Twenty years ago developers had hoped to wipe out the marsh in favor of a massive residential and commercial project. But after years of legal and financial wrangling, Torrance eventually set aside the land as a permanent environmental habitat.
Upkeep of the park is largely provided by the Friends of the Madrona Marsh organization and other volunteers, including Cub Scouts and Brownies.
The land, most of which is bounded by Sepulveda Boulevard on the south, Plaza del Amo on the north, Madrona Avenue on the west and Maple Avenue on the east, is home to a variety of plant and animal life, including egrets, ducks, foxes, snakes and tree frogs.
