In his Dec. 22 column, about the future of horse racing, Bill Christine includes a crazy-nutty comment from Cliff Goodrich, president of Santa Anita.

Goodrich says one of the cures for racing’s malaise is “interactive telecasts of racing, with fans betting at home.”

Hurry and throw out the Christmas tree so we can better see the fourth race from the track. One out of 100 bettors is ahead in wagering. Dad loses another 10 bucks needed for milk, rent and shoes. Mom slaps him across the face with a Racing Form. The frightened children run into the closet and move the guns for a place to hide.

If betting on the horses becomes legal in homes, it would benefit only one person: The lawyer who specializes in divorce cases.
