The Mexican American Opportunity Foundation is seeking children to join its new home-based Head Start preschool program. The federally funded program is open to children in South Gate and Huntington Park and in unincorporated Florence.

Children must be between 3 years, 9 months and 4 years, 9 months old and from low-income families to be eligible for the free program, said Ana Rosa Rodriguez, foundation spokeswoman. The foundation is also seeking to place children who have disabilities.

Children will participate through a plan in which a teacher visits their home weekly. Organizers hope to enroll 206 children in the home-based program by January. There are about 100 slots open.

The home-based program is organized to “empower the parent and make them the most capable teacher for their child,” Rodriguez said.

Head Start programs teach preschool children basic academic and social skills and good health and nutrition habits.

The Mexican American Opportunity Foundation was awarded a $2.5-million grant to begin the program. The foundation is still seeking a site for its new Head Start center.
