From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Workers restored water to thousands of people whose homes were cut off from supplies after a huge water main burst, causing a 20-foot geyser on Christmas. The 48-inch pipe ruptured late Christmas day in a mid-town area, cutting off water to about one third of the city’s buildings and sending a spray of water two stories high. Linda Grant, spokeswoman for the city’s Department of Public Works, said the broken pipe was capped about 1 a.m. Sunday.
