NEWPORT BEACH : Library Device Aids Hearing-Impaired

The city’s public library system now has a device that allows people with hearing problems to get their reference questions answered over the phone.

The Telecommunications Device for the Deaf, which is basically a printer hooked up to a modem, went into operation last week, said Tom Johnson, assistant librarian. In its first week, the TDD was used to handle a few inquiries.

“Not many people know about it yet,” Johnson said.

“This new device is the most recent evidence of our commitment to providing access, services and materials to all our customers, including those who need assistance,” Johnson said.

Users can find out if a particular book is available or even renew books that have been checked out.

The TDD is simple to operate. At the library, it receives messages that print out near the reference desk, Johnson said. Library employees can type a response and send it back to the person who initiated the message at home.

Johnson said the service will undoubtedly become popular because many people who are hearing-impaired have a TDD.

The library was able to purchase its TDD with a grant from the California State Library to help the library voluntarily comply with the federal Americans With Disabilities Act.

The access number is (714) 644-9457.
