Driver Punches Would-Be Carjacker

A Canoga Park man thwarted a carjacking attempt Monday when he punched the robber who ordered him from his vehicle at gunpoint, authorities said.

The would-be victim, described as a man in his 30s, was sitting in his Toyota pickup truck on the westbound side of Calabasas Road at the intersection with Parkway Calabasas about 2:45 p.m. when the gunman approached his truck, said Sgt. Denise Jezak of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The gunman walked up to the driver’s side, pointed a revolver at him and ordered the victim from the truck, Jezak said.

When the man stepped out of his truck, the robber, a Latino man in his 20s, hit him on the right side of the head with the pistol, Jezak said. The victim counterpunched, striking the man directly in the face, knocking him down, Jezak said.

“The victim told us he was afraid for his life,” Jezak said.

As soon as the suspect was struck, a turquoise-colored car driven by another man pulled up to the intersection, and both men fled, Jezak said.

Jezak was unsure whether this was the first carjacking attempt in Calabasas.
