ALTADENA : Rodney King Completes Alcohol Treatment Program

Rodney G. King has completed an alcohol treatment program and his probation for a robbery conviction, a state Department of Corrections spokesman said.
King, 28, of Altadena still faces trial Jan. 10 on charges of drunken driving. He was arrested Aug. 21 after crashing his wife’s car outside a nightclub.
After the arrest, parole officers ordered him to complete a 60-day stay at an alcohol abuse treatment program, but he wound up staying 90 days, according to the department’s Jerome Di Maggio.
Authorities could order King into such a program because he was on parole for three years for the 1989 holdup of a convenience store. But that term ended Monday, Di Maggio said.
King completed the formal program last month and is continuing treatment as an outpatient, he said.
“The report was very favorable. They said he went along with the program and tried to gain some insight,” Di Maggio said.
King still has a lawsuit pending against the city over his March 3, 1991, beating by police officers.
The not guilty verdicts returned against four officers on state charges led to last year’s riots. Two of the officers were later convicted of federal civil rights violations and are serving 30-month prison terms.
