A 39-year-old man died Monday night after he was shot in the back during an attempted robbery that occurred in front of several witnesses, police said Tuesday.

Police arrested two suspected gang members shortly after the 7:45 p.m. attack on suspicion of robbery and murder, Anaheim Police Sgt. Steve Rodig said.

The victim, Bill Roy Langstaff of Anaheim, and his brother were waiting for a bus in the 100 block of South Magnolia Avenue when the shooting occurred.

“It appears that there was an attempted robbery where the victim refused to produce his personal property,” Rodig said. “A struggle ensued and the victim was shot in the back in the middle of the street.”

Langstaff was taken to West Anaheim Medical Center, where he died from his injury.

The suspects, Jesus Gutierrez, 20, of Anaheim and Carlos Sanchez, 19, of Fullerton, reportedly ran from the scene after the shooting but were quickly stopped by a police officer who was patrolling the area, Rodig said.

Rodig said he did not know who fired the fatal shot. He said the handgun used in the shooting had not yet been recovered.

Gutierrez and Sanchez were being held at Anaheim City Jail on $250,000 bail each.
