Long Beach Area : Parents May Apply for New Federal Child-Care Subsidy
Working parents and those looking for jobs or attending school can get help paying for child care under a new federally funded program expected to benefit about 350 children.
The Long Beach office of the nonprofit Children’s Home Society of California is using a $1.8-million federal grant to help families in Long Beach, Signal Hill, Hawaiian Gardens, Bellflower, Cerritos, Norwalk, San Pedro, Wilmington and Avalon. The program is aimed at low-income parents who are working, seeking work or attending job training. In all, about 210 families will receive subsidies for child-care expenses. “This is the kind of program that can make a real difference to a child and that child’s family,” said Lauren Buongiovanni, the society’s assistant director of child-care services. Applicants must supply such information as the family’s size and its source and amount of annual income. Child-care expenses for those who qualify will be subsidized on a sliding scale based on need.
