CAMARILLO : Free Rides Offered to the Inebriated

Share

Roadrunner Shuttle Service is offering free rides home to Camarillo residents who drink too much during the holidays.

By calling the company at (800) 247-7919 from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m., a reveler will be picked up by a shuttle van in about 30 minutes. The free service has been in effect since Dec. 17 and will end Sunday.

“So far, the response has been good,” said Operations Manager Jerry Nilsen. “One night shortly before Christmas, we received nine calls.”

The shuttle will only take revelers from a bar or a party to their home, but not from bar to bar or party to party.

Ventura County sheriff’s officials said the service will add an extra measure of safety for Camarillo residents.

“If there’s any doubt about your condition, you should call this service, a friend, or just don’t drive,” said Sgt. Keith Lazz. “I can tell you that if you get caught, there’s no question that you’re going to jail.”

The shuttle service is the idea of Roadrunner Owner Desmond Sandlin, a Camarillo resident who wanted to give something back to his hometown, Nilsen said.
