In some way, that spirit applies for some of the sports people who died in 1993, either in their prime or still at the height of their influence and popularity:

--Davey Allison, 32, NASCAR driver, of injuries sustained in a helicopter crash July 13.

--Jeff Alm, 25, Oilers tackle, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Dec. 14, after a close friend died in a one-car accident as Alm drove.

--Arthur Ashe, 49, tennis champion, commentator, author and human-rights statesman, of AIDS-related pneumonia Feb. 6.

--Roy Campanella, 71, Hall of Fame catcher for the Dodgers, of a heart attack June 26.

--Billy Conn, 75, former light-heavyweight champion, of pneumonia May 29.

--Tim Crews, 31, and Steve Olin, 27, Indians pitchers, from injuries in a spring-training boating accident March 23.

--Don Drysdale, 56, Hall of Fame pitcher for the Dodgers, of a heart attack July 3.

--Heather Farr, 28, LPGA golfer, of cancer Nov. 20.

--James Jordan, 56, father of NBA superstar Michael Jordan, murdered as he slept in his car at a roadside rest stop Aug. 3.

--Alan Kulwicki, 38, NASCAR driver, in a plane crash April 1.

--Reggie Lewis, 27, Celtics captain and high scorer, of cardiac arrest while shooting baskets July 27.

--Drazen Petrovic, 28, international basketball star and Nets high scorer, in an auto accident in Germany June 7.

--Jim Valvano, 47, former NCAA champion basketball coach and television commentator, of cancer April 28.

--Cliff Young, 29, Indians pitcher, in an auto accident Nov. 4.

--Zambian national soccer team, in a plane crash April 27.
