San Gabriel Mountains : Man Rescued After Plunge
A Rosemead man whose pickup truck careened off Angeles Crest Highway and plunged into a canyon was rescued early Saturday morning after he saw in the new year waiting for help, a sheriff’s detective said.
Manuel Landeros, 32, suffered a broken leg and arm, and cuts and bruises, sheriff’s Lt. Santo Marino said. Landeros was thrown from the truck after it had traveled 300 feet down the canyon. The truck fell another 450 feet, he said.
Sheriff’s deputies received a call just before midnight Friday from a person reporting Landeros’ cries for help, Marino said.
The Montrose Search and Rescue Team rappelled down to Landeros just after 1 a.m. and lifted him to waiting paramedics. He was airlifted by helicopter to Huntington Memorial Hospital.
The cause of the accident is unknown. Landeros had no passengers.
