Frey Agrees to Contract With Giants
Steve Frey, the left-handed relief pitcher who led the Angels with 13 saves last season, reached an agreement Wednesday with the San Francisco Giants on a two-year contract worth $1.85 million. The Angels had offered $1.7 million.
“We tried, we tried our best to work out something with the Angels,” Frey said, “but nothing ever happened. I wanted to go to the Angels all along, but they just never budged. It’s a shame, but they really left me no choice.”
Said Angel General Manager Whitey Herzog: “We made a good offer to him, and we hate to lose him, but we’ll be all right.”
The Angels will attempt to replace Frey in the bullpen by picking up a veteran free agent, possibly Bob Patterson (formerly of Texas) or Bob MacDonald (formerly of Detroit). The Angels also are expected to enter the season with one of their own young lefties in the bullpen, choosing between Mark Holzemer and Hilly Hathaway.
Meanwhile, interest in free-agent reliever Gregg Olson has intensified since Dr. James Andrews said no surgery will be needed on Olson’s right elbow. The Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies and Toronto Blue Jays have joined the Angels and Baltimore Orioles in their quest of Olson.
The Angels are scheduled to make offers to starting pitcher Mike Harkey today and to Olson on Friday.
