WILL ROGERS’ WORLD: America’s Foremost Political Humorist Comments on the ‘20s and ‘30s--and on the ‘80s and ‘90s edited by Bryan B. Sterling & Francis N. Sterling (M. Evans & Co.: $9.95; 242 pp., illustrated). Vaudeville headliner, movie star, newspaper columnist and radio personality, Will Rogers acted as a kind of wisecracking surrogate uncle to the nation during the ‘20s and ‘30s. Many of his observations remain remarkably timely, as the Sterlings demonstrate in this very funny anthology, e.g., “We are billions in the hole and will be billions more next year, and not a Congressman has got the nerve to ask voters to pay part of it in taxes.”
