The Norris Theatre will kick off its spring season today with a production of the children’s classic “101 Dalmatians.”

Based on a 1956 British story, the musical follows the lives of puppies “dog-napped” by Cruella De Vil and her henchmen. The story, which has been translated into more than a dozen languages, was made into a 1961 Walt Disney animated film of the same name.

The theater production allows for audience participation.

Children, and young-at-heart adults, are encouraged to assume the roles of the lost Dalmatians by barking, rolling around and pretending to climb over fences--without ever leaving their seats.

With lavish costumes and lively music, the musical is designed to entertain and educate theatergoers, said Michele Roberge, Norris’ director of marketing and development.

The musical, produced by the Arvada Center Children’s Theatre of Colorado, retains the original British flavor that, Roberge said, was lost in the Disney film.

The theater added an evening performance after two afternoon shows sold out.

“Parents realize how important it is to expose kids to live productions,” Roberge said. “It really opens (children’s) eyes and opens their imaginations.”

The Norris Theatre, a 450-seat community playhouse in Rolling Hills Estates, is celebrating its 10th year. This weekend’s show is the latest in a series of productions geared toward younger crowds.

Roberge said the children’s series has blossomed since its introduction four years ago.

Three performances of “101 Dalmatians” are scheduled for today, but tickets are selling fast.

Tickets for the 6:30 p.m. show are $12 through the Norris Theatre Box Office; (310) 544-0403. Free parking is next to the theater, at 27570 Crossfield Drive at Indian Peak Road. The show is recommended for children 5 and older.
