ANAHEIM : Council Expected to OK New Police Chief
The City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday to approve Capt. Randall Gaston as the city’s new police chief.
The vote is expected to be a formality, because all five council members have said they support City Manager James D. Ruth’s selection of Gaston, who would be sworn in immediately after the vote. He will replace Joseph T. Molloy, who died of a heart attack in July.
Gaston, 49, has worked through the ranks at the Anaheim Police Department, beginning as a patrol officer in 1965. He was promoted to captain in 1983 and most recently led the department’s special operations unit, which includes the SWAT team.
Gaston has a bachelor’s degree in criminology from Cal State Long Beach and a master’s degree in public administration from USC. He is married to an Anaheim teacher, and they have four children.
The council meeting begins at 5 p.m. at City Hall, 200 S. Anaheim Blvd.
