VENTURA : Hearing to Address Health Clinic Plan
Ventura County officials will accept public testimony today on a plan to buy a building owned by Texaco for the new home of the west Ventura public health clinic.
The Board of Supervisors agreed two weeks ago to tentatively move forward with plans to purchase the building at 133 W. Santa Clara St., but decided to hold another public hearing on the matter today.
The hearing is set to begin at 10 a.m in the board hearing room at the County Government Center.
County Public Works Director Arthur Goulet said the county intends to purchase the site for $1.3 million if Texaco removes asbestos ceiling tiles and cleans up soil contamination from underground fuel tanks. As of Monday, an agreement on the cleanup had not been reached, Goulet said.
“We are still waiting to hear from Texaco to whether they will accept our offer,” Goulet said.
At a recent public hearing on the proposal, several community leaders and the county’s doctor in charge of emergency services urged the supervisors to purchase the building, saying the clinic would be a cornerstone of health services for the poor in west Ventura.
The West Ventura Family Care Clinic is now run from cramped quarters at 110 N. Olive St., Ventura.
