Anti-Violence Group Changes Its Name
To reflect its expanded services and programs, the Ventura County Coalition Against Household Violence has changed its name to Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence.
When the Ventura County Rape and Sexual Assault Center closed last year, the coalition was awarded a three-year grant for $76,000 annually by the California office of criminal justice to provide services for rape victims. Using the money from the grant, the coalition hired Norma Henderson, who had been working as a client advocate for the coalition, to answer legal questions frequently asked by victims.
Henderson’s duties include helping clients understand restraining order applications and the reporting and prosecution of domestic or sexual crimes.
Other services provided by the coalition include a child-abuse hot line and anger management hot line, which was created primarily for men who have a history of battering women.
To recognize the work of those who assist domestic violence and sexual assault victims, the coalition will honor Ventura County Dist. Atty. Michael D. Bradbury during a dinner and Valentine dance Feb. 4.
Residents interested in attending the dinner, which will be held at the Colony Harbortown Resort, should call 654-8141. The deadline for reservations is Jan. 28.
The coalition’s 24-hour hot lines include Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault, 656-1111; Anger Management, 656-4861, and Child Abuse/Listening Line, 656-4810.
