LOS ANGELES : 3 Schools Get Funds for ‘Transportation Academies’
Special “transportation academies” to prepare students to pursue careers as architects, engineers or urban planners will open soon at three Los Angeles high schools under a federal and local grant of nearly $900,000.
The academies will be at Locke, North Hollywood and Wilson high schools. Each will function as a school within a school and will enroll between 150 and 200 students. The grant was provided by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the Federal Transit Administration.
The goal is to provide academic and vocational training, transportation internships and industry mentors to students. Most of the money will be used to buy computer upgrades so that students can study the latest technologies related to transportation issues.
The Los Angeles Board of Education unanimously approved the grant Monday, praising the program for enabling schools to enter into a partnership with government agencies. Also, school officials said the program will allow students to have real-life applications of their math, geometry and other studies.
