Judge Denies Request for New Trial by Lobbyist Jackson, Ex-Sen. Carpenter
A federal judge rejected a defense request to order a new trial for former lobbyist Clayton R. Jackson and former state Sen. Paul B. Carpenter on corruption charges.
U.S. District Judge Edward Garcia, who conducted a seven-week trial that resulted in guilty verdicts last month, rejected claims that the government engaged in entrapment and misconduct. Both defendants were in court. They are free on their own recognizance and are scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 14.
Jackson was convicted of bribing former state Sen. Alan Robbins in connection with bills of interest to Jackson’s clients, among other corruption charges. Both Jackson and Carpenter were convicted of engaging in a money-laundering scheme with Robbins (D-Van Nuys).
