A barroom brawl in Port Hueneme left one man in the hospital in serious condition and another man in jail.

James Ellis, 23, of San Diego was arrested after Robert Bowers, 41, of Port Hueneme was stabbed in the neck with a broken beer bottle. The two had been playing pool and drinking together most of the evening, said Sgt. Jerry Beck of the Port Hueneme Police Department.

Witnesses told police that just after midnight, Ellis attacked Bowers without provocation, lunging at him with a broken beer bottle.

Bowers was taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery early Tuesday to repair nerves damaged in the attack. He is listed in stable condition, said a hospital spokeswoman, who added that the attack came close to cutting an artery.

Police arrested Ellis a short distance from the bar.

He was covered in blood and suffering from a broken nose, Beck said. He was booked into county jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and inflicting grievous bodily harm. His bail was set at $5,000.
