INGLEWOOD : Man Convicted of Murder of Cabbie During Robbery

Share

An Inglewood man was convicted Tuesday of murdering a taxi driver in 1991 as the cabbie tried to run away after his cab was commandeered.

A Superior Court jury also found Kenneth Eugene Redman, 23, guilty of the special circumstance of murder during a robbery, which makes him eligible for the death penalty or life in prison without parole.

The cabbie, Titus Imaku, 35, was shot several times and his body was dumped in an alley a mile from his cab.

Born in Nigeria and the father of two, Imaku was a driver for Taxi Systems in Long Beach and an engineering student at Cal State Long Beach.

He had attended Compton College and had a business degree from Cal State Dominguez Hills, but “he couldn’t find a job,” Imaku’s wife, Deborah, recalled after the slaying. “He decided to drive the taxi because he needed to support his family.”

The penalty phase of the trial was scheduled to start today. Deputy Dist. Atty. Robert Grace has said he will seek the death penalty.
