Tandy Will Add Stores, Increase Work Force by 3,600 : Growth: The nation’s largest electronics retailer will open 30 new outlets as it continues its aggressive strategy to expand.

Tandy Corp., the nation’s largest electronics retailer, said Wednesday that the aggressive retail growth strategy it started last year will create more than 3,600 jobs in 1994.

Most of the jobs will come as Tandy adds 24 Computer City and six Incredible Universe stores.

“Driven by new store openings and innovative services ideas, 1994 should provide excellent sales growth for Tandy,” Chairman and Chief Executive John Roach said in a statement.

Analysts saw little new in the announcement but said it highlights the momentum created by Tandy’s decision to shed its manufacturing businesses and focus on retail.

“It’s an aggressive plan but one which I think Tandy can make and manage,” said Dennis Van Zelfden, retail and consumer product analyst at Rauscher Pierce Refsnes Inc. in Dallas.

Of the new jobs, about 1,800 will come with the six Incredible Universe stores added to the three already open. Two of the warehouse-size stores will open in Miami and Tempe, Ariz.; locations for the other four have not been announced, said Lou Ann Blaylock, Tandy’s vice president of corporate relations.

About 1,600 employees will be added at the 24 new Computer City Supercenters. None of those locations have been revealed, Blaylock said. Tandy has 40 Computer City stores open now.

Tandy will also add about 200 employees at its Ft. Worth headquarters. About half those workers will be administrative, and the rest will work in Tandy’s information systems area, doing jobs such as computer analysis of the company’s sophisticated point-of-sale database, Blaylock said.

Tandy has about 7,000 stores and dealers, including 6,500 Radio Shack outlets. Other chains include McDuff Electronics, Videoconcepts and Edge in Electronics.
